This vintage piece of Robert Carlson is an excellent example of his finest work with the raku firing technique. The raku process was the ancient Japanese art of firing a piece of clay and immediately throwing it into a pit filled with natural materials such as straw, hay, grass as well as other items such as metal. There it burned and took own the gorgeous colors produced by the natural materials. This is one of the best examples of this technique.
It is a sphere that is 10” tall, and has a circumference of 33 “. The opening on the top is 2.5 “. This is an extremely large piece that is extraordinarily impressive. The top is crowned with a subtle rim. The hues are very colorful but subtle, with oranges, reds and grays predominating. It is signed by the artist.
