This work by Warren McKenzie is a hand thrown pottery vase that has gone through the Raku process, leaving it with a variety of smoked colors from a dark mustard to dark brown and all the hues in-between. It is five and a quarter inches tall and is relatively wide, as the photos will demonstrate. It features a large round opening on the top, finished with a small and subtle rim.

The remarkable thing about this piece is its distinguished form.  The potter has thrown the pot in an obviously round shape and then has ‘sliced’ it at regular intervals from the top to the bottom around the entire circumference. This gives it a bold and strong look. Although it is of medium size, it has a remarkable impact on the eye. The bottom portion is dark giving it a heavy appearance.

This is a classical form, and could be interpreted as being relatively old. It would be at home in a gallery or anywhere in a residence, where it will be the focus of attention.  It holds only dry materials, and never water, as with all Raku pieces. It looks its best empty where one simply focuses on its form. It has an ‘architectural’ feel to it, which adds another dimension to its appearance.

It is truly a gallery- and museum-quality work, and would be a ‘find’ for any serious collector. This Vase is marked "McKenzie Tryon NC."
