Presented here is a Japanese Tea Bowl that has the appearance of an ancient piece of pottery, perhaps BC in age. The surface is rough and it has a grog and semi-gloss glaze covering the entire body. It is a combination of various shades of gray.
The piece is seated on a small foot giving it the effect of being on display. Its width is a little over 5 ½" and the height is 3". There is an incision encircling the entire piece three quarters of an inch from the top. The colors are random, giving it an abstract effect.
This piece is made by a well known potter who studied with Voulkos and shows the influence of both Voulkos and that of the distinct personality of the artist. This is truly a find - a handsome representation of this genre. It has the strong influence of the ancient Raku process. This is logical as the artist studied and produced in Japan with Voulkos for some time.
This is a wonderful ‘find’ for any collector, which can be used for either display or utilitarian use.
