This is one of the first borderline minimalist sculptures I have introduced to this site. It was constructed by Ian Stainton from West Yorkshire, United Kingdom.
This work is 5 ˝" tall. It appears at first glance to be a ‘candle holder’. But, this is not a utilitarian object, as it was conceived as a sculpture. As you can see, it is beige in color, and has anywhere between three and five incisions that wave their way around the base, adding a very subtle texture and design to the piece.
On the way up, it is indented slightly and then capped with a ‘pipe’ looking structure. There is a slight and subtle rim around the top. I suppose if someone wished, they could use it as a vase, but that certainly was not for what it was conceived. It stands independently on its own, as an original piece of artwork.
There are no decorative elements to get in the way of its form, and it is most successfully viewed from a slight distance. It is suitable for any environment, but would be most at home with other minimalist pieces that are non-functioning independent works of art.
