These bowls will be sold separately, as people will be vying for them. But for brevity’s sake, the descriptions of each bowl are identical.
Marilee Hall has long been a prominent fixture in the elite of the pottery world. Her work is constantly evolving and growing in maturity, rather than 'selling out' and going the 'kitschy' direction, a direction that seems to almost be the rule. She has worked with Robert Carlson, also a famous artist for decades, and they share a site on the internet that is worth investigation.
For sale here are two identical bowls, ancient in character. They are Raku works - some of the more successful works in this genre. They have taken on a deep, dark character, which gives them the appearance of something dug up from the ground and found to be nearly 2,000 years old.
Each is a little over 2" tall and approximately 5" wide. They flair out very rapidly from a ¾" base to the resulting diameter. Each shares the same characteristics: the dark deep color with a hint of copper, and some other slightly metallic character. But these highlights do not ‘scream’ or dominate in a sort of way as in so much Raku. Miss Hall has carefully placed on the top of the exterior, near the rim, three evenly spaced semi-precious stones. I obviously have no idea what the real origin of them is, but the fact is that they are so very effective in lending a more ancient look: wonderful adornments to the already very regal bowls.
One thing that must be pointed out here is the significance of their age. They were purchased in 1986 at an art gallery in Louisville, Kentucky where her work was being championed. This makes them almost 20 years old, a significant fact for a living artist.
I don’t labor on the descriptions of these bowls. As they will be so easily photographed, you will be able to experience their incredible beauty first hand. These are personal possessions, so they would be very hard to relinquish if I had not already acquired other works of hers. I truly believe the strongest significance here to be their age. You be the judge of the photos. You’ll be drawn in if you are at all impressed with things ancient and seething with character.
