This enormous piece doubles as either an oversized charger, or more beautifully as a wall hanging. It is almost 16 ½" wide. It was produced by studio potter Bill Stewart. The piece is part of a collection of distinguished pieces purchased at an estate sale. The date of purchase is from the early 1980’s.
The color scheme has small, sparse dark blue accents, with the largest portion of the plate being a deep burgundy. The colors work together beautifully. The surface of the piece is a semi-gloss. It has a narrow and small raised rim that makes the piece seem even larger than it is. It would work beautifully on an easel for display.
The piece is classified ‘abstract’ because of its spontaneous, unpredictable glazing. The surface serves as a canvas for the artist to ‘paint’ on. In this case, it would be classified ‘abstract expressionist’ There is great ‘chance’ in the placement of the dark blue swathes.
It is both a functional piece and an art piece. I feel it works best in the art realm. It could be part of a serious collection, or a decorative object that commands a great deal of attention. This would be an excellent addition for the serious collector. It is truly impressive, and would surprise the potential buyer by its overwhelming size.
