Presented here is a primitive ‘bowl,’ primitive because of its uneven glazing and uneven edges around the circumference. It is 6" X 6", and is about 2" high because of the raised rim. The piece looks very much like a work by Scheier Heino, but was produced by the Ruth & Stan Walters Studio of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The piece is a red clay color, under a very roughly and thinly covered white glaze. The entire surface is a matte finish. Part of the charm and beauty of the piece is the haphazard white over the primitive clay.
It is obviously slab built, but much of it is constructed utilizing the ‘pinch’ technique. One thing the prospective owner will be proud to know is that it was exhibited at the Nationals in 1966. This is an obvious clue that the quality of the work is extremely high, and the monetary value even higher. It is truly a gallery or museum piece, and it would be an insult to use it in a utilitarian way. It truly is a collector’s work.
The bowl will fit with other pieces, and can be used in a decorative manner, as long as it has its own space for display. It needs and merits this. This bowl is only for the most serious collector who appreciates quality studio pieces.
