Featured here is a great Art Deco-type vase that has a classical form and ancient look to it. The bottom is marked ‘Fox’ and the piece is European in origin. It is an excellent example of the ancient art of Raku. It survived its firing and consequential transfer into a vat of saw dust and other combustible materials, causing gorgeous and extensive crazing, one of the outstanding features of the piece.

The vase is approximately 9" tall and 21" in diameter. It is a hefty size. An outstanding feature of the piece is the two levels of crazing, the dark black lines, so obviously seen in the photos, and within the lines a more subtle spider web crazing. The piece has a primitive appearance because of this extensive crazing. Very close to the top is a circular band of black outlining its circumference and setting off a lidded look, the lid rising quickly to the small opening on the top.

It is white and at times grey in color. It appears to be fragile, but as with all successful Raku, is as strong and stable as any other pottery. This crazing and sphere-like form lends it an ancient and primitive look.

Serious enthusiasts will be eager to procure this piece as there are so many other pieces in the genre, and many people develop large collections of this style.
