TWO SMALLER STROMMEN WORKS

Low bowl containing smaller fracture bowl

This bowl is thrown with red clay that has been fired in a wood kiln. The result is a rich mahogany color with several areas that are almost black. It has a matte surface.

It is constructed of two bowls, the outer being entirely intact, the smaller one, inside, is fractured in a large area with the piece remaining on the floor of the bowl.

A unique and beautiful feature of the piece is a large green, transparent ‘pool’ of glaze dominating the bottom of the interior. Its deep glass-like appearance looks like a pool of water.

This is one of countless pieces by Strommen that are smaller in size and can be used in a variety of places. You will see that these are also museum-quality works, as are all of his large pieces.

Diamond polished bowl

Strommen demonstrates in this medium-sized vessel his most sophisticated and virtuosic work utilizing his minimalist techniques.

Looking inside, one can see a double-hulled bottom, extraordinary in itself. But the most outstanding feature of the piece is the grey diamond polished exterior that has been meticulously brought to a glass-like surface. At first glance, my reaction was to inquire about the glaze. Astonishingly there is none. In its place are endless hours of tedious polishing that produced this ultra slick surface.

On the top surface are displayed the most subtle and meticulously executed series of miniscule to large circles that have been inscribed, adding the most subtle counterpoint to the glass-like exterior.

This is an extraordinary piece that will most likely not be duplicated. It will find its way to a museum or a home that consists entirely of main line art pieces.
