ROBERT CARLSON
Robert Carlson has been a household word in the world of sophisticated art pottery for many years. His works are in demand, and he satisfies this with an extremely prolific output.
Highlights of his extensive education are:
1960-63, School of the Art Institute, Chicago, Illinois.
1975 – Ceramic Workshop with world renowned artist, Paul Soldner, University of Illinois.
1982 – Workshop with Susan and Steven Kemeneffy; American Art Clay Company, Indianapolis, Indiana.
1993 – Workshop with renowned potter, Don Reitz.
These are but a smattering of the educational and workshop participations that he experienced during his long career. The complete list is available but impossible to list in his biography.
His teaching experience falls into this same category, but is longer. A smattering of them is:
1976-77 – Artist in Residence, City/County Arts Council, Paducah, KY.
1977 – Raku Pottery Workshop; Wustum Museum, Racine, WI.
1977-78 – Artist in Residence/Ceramics Instructor – Island Art Center, St. Simon’s Island, GA.

2000 – Ceramic Workshop Instructor, Clay Conference, Academy Art Museum, Easton, MD.
2002 – Raku Workshop Instructor, Clayarts Studio and Gallery, Emmetsburg, MD.
The complete list is approximately 6-7 times this length.
He has been the recipient of many awards and distinctions. A brief list would include:
Best in Show, 3-D; Arts Festival of Atlanta
1st Prize; South Miami Arts Festival
1st Prize; Walt Disney World Festival of the Masters
Elected President; Tennessee Artists-Craftsman’s Association
Several Purchase Awards
Published: The Best of Pottery, Quarry Books; Artist’s Profile, American Style Magazine; Frederick Magazine article, “The Fire Outside”, Maryland Made section
Best in Show: Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival
Curator of The Art of Clay, McGuire Fine Arts Gallery, Frederick MD.
His recent Shows and Exhibitions are again far too numerous to list. I will only say that they range geographically across our entire continent.
However, they do include:
The Smithsonian Institution
Del Mano Gallery
Vesperman Gallery
Gallery 500
Reston Art Center
Carlson’s work is in various forms, concentrating on sculpture, but with true art pieces that are termed utilitarian, but highly decorative in function. His style has evolved constantly over the years, and he never ‘stands still’. This Gallery is particularly proud to be able to present three of his pieces – two of them vintage pieces.
